Silent gratitude isn’t much use to anyone

After reading several thousand “me too” posts on various forums, finally a solution to the nVidia ate my RDP problem.

Thank you bandom rastard for the solution, and Weyland (dot be) for publishing it somewhere I could find it!

To summarise (and slightly clarify) the solution…

If (like me), you run an XP box and after upgrading to nVidia WHQL 175.16 drivers (or in my case 175.19) your attempts to RDP to this box fail, this may help you too:

  1. Open regedit
  2. Go to the node: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager\Memory Management
  3. Add a new DWORD Value, name it SessionImageSize
  4. Modify this DWORD, change the Value data (from the default 0) to 20
  5. Restart your PC and you should now be able to RDP to it again

Note: My assumption is that this fix will outlast future driver upgrades, but if the problem re-occurs in future, you may need to repeat this process, and maybe even increase the size (try 30).

Disclaimer: I provide this fix because it worked for me. You should carry it out at your own discretion because I will not accept any responsibility for what happens afterwards. Unless it works, in which case: No worries, any time.
